Moving major, business-supporting applications to the cloud can be a challenge for a variety of reasons. You may have concerns about the physical migration of data, as data loss or business disruption stemming from a migration issue would be a disaster for the business. Security is another typical concern, as a data breach of your most sensitive applications—like SAP or Oracle— could prove highly damaging. Akin to security, data sovereignty is an issue for many businesses. Stringent compliance laws in some jurisdictions are dictating data “residency”; and in the cloud, it is not always clear where the data is housed. Among managed cloud service users, 68% state that using such services helps them to better manage resource allocation and make SAP and Oracle costs more predictable. In this paper, we will look at common concerns over deploying and optimally managing business-critical, legacy applications in the cloud. We consider the benefits of managed cloud services, and how your

Forward-thinking enterprises understand what it takes to be successful in this data-rich, increasingly automated economy. According to the Harvard Business Review Analytic Services research report The Rise of Intelligent Automation: TurningComplexity into Profit, sponsored by Oracle, at least 7 in 10 executives understand that predictive analytics (80%) and AI and machine learning (68%) are important for the future of the business. Even as executives recognize the vital role data plays in their businesses, many are unable to take advantage of the value residing in their data. The old ways of collecting, managing, storing, and analyzing data are no longer effective, and are preventing businesses from extracting potential value. Many simply can’t execute on a data-driven vision.

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is more than just a new way to store and analyze data; it’s a whole new approach to getting more value from your data. Market leaders in every industry depend on analytics to reach new customers, streamline business processes, and gain a competitive edge. Data warehouses remain at the heart of these business intelligence (BI) initiatives, but traditional data-warehouse projects are complex undertakings that take months or even years to deliver results. Relying on a cloud provider accelerates the process of provisioning data-warehouse infrastructure, but in most cases database administrators (DBAs) still have to install and manage the database platform, then work with the line-of-business leaders to build the data model and analytics. Once the warehouse is deployed—either on premises or in the cloud—they face an endless cycle of tuning, securing, scaling, and maintaining these analytic assets. Oracle has a better way. This report provides an overview of the Oracle Cloud at Customer portfolio (this includes Oracle Exadata Cloud at Customer, Oracle Big Data Cloud at Customer, Oracle SaaS at Customer and Oracle Cloud at Customer) and analyzes its capabilities to satisfy the need of enterprises for a next-generation computing platform. A next-generation computing platform allows enterprises to deploy workloads across the premises and the public cloud. For enterprises running their next-generation applications on a next-generation computing platform, Oracle Cloud at Customer does very well because of Oracle’s vision of the “chip-to-click” integrated technology stack (i.e., from the CPU silicon, across all OSI layers and all the way to the end-user mouse click). With Oracle using the same technology stack and machines both in its cloud and on premises, it has the highest degree of identicality across these offerings from all vendors that are part of Constellation Research’s Market Overview on next-genera

Oracle Engineered Systems are architected to work as a unified whole, so organizations can hit the ground running after deployment. Organizations choose how they want to consume the infrastructure: on-premises, in a public cloud, or in a public cloud located inside the customer’s data center and behind their firewall using Oracle’s “Cloud at Customer” offering. Oracle Exadata and Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (Recovery Appliance) offer an attractive alternative to do-it-yourself deployments. Together, they provide an architecture designed for scalability, simplified management, improved cost of ownership, reduced downtime, zero-data loss, and an increased ability to keep software updated with security and patching. Traditionally, the best practice for mission-critical Oracle Database backup and recovery was to use storage-led, purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) such as Data Domain, integrated with RMAN, Oracle’s automated backup and recovery utility. This disk-based backup approach solved two problems: 1) It enabled faster recovery (from disk versus tape) 2) It increased recovery flexibility by storing many more backups online, enabling restoration from that data to recover production databases; and provisioning copies for test/dev. At its core, however, this approach remains a batch process that involves many dozens of complicated steps for backups and even more steps for recovery. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (RA) customers report that total cost of ownership (TCO) and downtime costs (e.g. lost revenue due to database or application downtime) are significantly reduced due to the simplification and, where possible, the automation of the backup and recovery process.
