Safety has always been Eaton’s highest priority and we work closely with the NEC (National Electric Code) to ensure new policies continue to protect our most valuable resources, people. Eaton, the NEC, NEMA, and other organizations have long maintained that molded case circuit breakers are not suitable for repair or refurbishment. While changes to the code for 2020 do not change that position, they do provide clarity on what it means to be refurbished and what is now required when a suitable product is refurbished, including clearly marking the item as refurbished and removing the original manufacturer’s listing mark. The new code distinguishes between general maintenance like replacing a breaker, and refurbishment, altering a piece of equipment to a once again operational state. Because a refurbished unit cannot be tested to the manufacturer’s test protocol, it cannot continue to carry the original listing mark. Read the article below and learn about "reconditioned", and what the NEC is doing to reinforce that UL489 molded case circuit breakers are not suitable for refurbishment or repair.

For manufacturers, the transition to Industry 4.0 has meant the accumulation of data, massive data. Indeed, the accumulation, distribution and evaluation of data are driving virtually every decision on the manufacturing plant floor and supply chains shaping those decisions. Given the striking fact that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created over the last two years, it isn’t surprising that more than 60 percent of large companies report having a Chief Data Officer. But what has opened the floodgates to this deluge of information in manufacturing? Ordinary sensors have been transformed into smart sensors with the advent of IoT technologies and are being deployed by manufacturers along every step of the supply chain. Sensors are now detecting everything from when a piece of equipment will need maintenance to controlling energy costs inside factories.

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) provides a fast and accurate method of producing jigs and fixtures. FDM is an additive manufacturing process that builds plastic parts layer-by-layer using data from computer-aided design (CAD) files. By using FDM, the traditional fabrication process is substantially simplified; tool-making becomes less expensive and time consuming. As a result, manufacturers realize immediate improvements in productivity, efficiency and quality. Find out how the Oreck Corporation, a well-respected manufacturer of vacuum cleaners and other cleaning appliances, realized immediate savings in cost, production time and inspection time by implementing FDM for its fixtures.

For years, manufacturers have been trying to streamline processes and associated supply chains by building marketplaces, standardized exchanges, and monolithic systems. In many cases, these solutions missed the mark, resulting in fragmented and brittle processes without easy data sharing. Blockchain, the underlying technology behind Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, can potentially solve these problems. Sharing information via a trusted distributed network with embedded business logic offers many benefits for manufacturing, especially when combined with the IoT and AI communities. Watch this webinar: Blockchain & Manufacturing: A Smarter Way to Drive Efficiency in the Semiconductor and Electronics Supply Chains, with speaker Nelson Petracek, chief technology officer, TIBCO Software.

The current trend in manufacturing is towards tailor-made products in smaller lots with shorter delivery times. This change may lead to frequent production modifications resulting in increased machine downtime, higher production cost, product waste—and the need to rework faulty products. To satisfy the customer demand behind this trend, manufacturers must move quickly to new production models. Quality assurance is the key area that IT must support. At the same time, the traceability of products becomes central to compliance as well as quality. Traceability can be achieved by interconnecting data sources across the factory, analyzing historical and streaming data for insights, and taking immediate action to control the entire end-to-end process. Doing so can lead to noticeable cost reductions, and gains in efficiency, process reliability, and speed of new product delivery. Additionally, analytics helps manufacturers find the best setups for machinery.
