VMware vSAN is enterprise-class, vSphere-native storage that powers more hyper-converged infrastructure solutions than any other vendor. vSAN accelerates and simplifies the data center modernization journey by helping you evolve your infrastructure without risk, reduce TCO through simplified operations and server economics, and scale to tomorrow’s business needs with an agile, cloud-ready platform. As the only vSphere-native storage platform, vSAN naturally extends virtualization to storage, creating a hyperconverged solution that simply works with existing tools, skill sets, software solutions, and server platforms. The result is an agile IT environment ready for dynamic business needs.

The software-defined data center (SDDC) holds tremendous promise for enterprise IT. Within the SDDC, the benefits of server virtualization are extended to storage and networking, so the entire infrastructure can be abstracted and centrally managed under a unified platform. IT teams are able to leverage unprecedented levels of virtualization, orchestration, and automation to achieve the services-based delivery model that enables true digital transformation.

Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach. This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.

In March 2014, Cisco Systems commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study and examine the potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). The purpose of this study is to provide readers with a framework to evaluate the potential financial impact of the Cisco UCS on their organizations. To better understand the benefits, costs, and risks associated with a Cisco UCS implementation, Forrester interviewed several customers with multiple years of experience using Cisco UCS. Cisco Unified Computing System and servers unify computing, networking, management, virtualization, and storage access into a single integrated architecture

By now, much has been written about the advantages server virtualization brings to an enterprise. In the June 2013 survey, 63% of all companies and 100% of large enterprises reported having a server virtualization program. However, when you segment the virtualization rates, you find a trend that indicates that large enterprises in particular are not gaining all of the advantages that server virtualization has to offer. What is more difficult and remains a challenge, particularly for large enterprises, is virtualizing Tier 1 applications. These are large, mission-critical enterprise applications such as email, customer relationship management (CRM), or enterprise resource planning (ERP). These applications tend to be very large, consume the entire capacity of a current generation server, and require high application uptimes. As shown in Figure 1, the virtualization rates for these applications are far lower than Tier 2 apps. In this eBook, you’ll learn how the NEC enterprise server provides a platform that now gives customers the right platform to virtualize their Tier 1 apps.

Because of the outstanding economy, flexibility, and service levels it offers, virtualization is transforming data centers at breakneck speed: by 2016, an estimated 80 percent of the world's x86 servers will be Virtual Machines (VMs). But the speed of this transformation, along with the high resource utilization, ease of cloning, moving workloads, and other ways virtualization works its magic, raise challenges for “traditional” IT services and the teams that deliver them.

Virtualization continues to lead a sea change for enterprise-scale data centers and cloud environments, delivering well-established benefits such as cost savings, reduced physical space and power requirements, simpler and more flexible testing environments, faster server provisioning, and improved return on investment. Yet for many organizations, one of virtualization’s greatest benefits is only now being realized in the form of highly portable and flexible virtual images. Natural extensions of virtualization technology, virtual images help organizations achieve even greater efficiencies and cost savings.
