Businesses are struggling with numerous variables to determine what their stance should be regarding artificial intelligence (AI) applications that deliver new insights using deep learning. The business opportunities are exceptionally promising. Not acting could potentially be a business disaster as competitors gain a wealth of previously unavailable data to grow their customer base. Most organizations are aware of the challenge, and their lines of business (LOBs), IT staff, data scientists, and developers are working to define an AI strategy. IDC believes that this emerging environment is to date still highly undefined, even as businesses must make critical decisions. Should businesses develop in-house or use VARs, systems integrators, or consultants? Should they deploy on-premise, in the cloud, or in some hybrid form? Can they use existing infrastructure, or do AI applications and deep learning require new servers with new capabilities? We believe that many of these questions can be

To meet the growing challenges of a competitive world economy, a digital transformation is taking place in the enterprise. Organizations realize that to be competitive they need to be more agile. They need to reach their customers wherever they are, and they need to be able to scale their applications to meet customer demands. To meet these challenges, organizations are deploying new microservice applications that are changing the application delivery environment. These applications are agile, configured to enable new features to be added without disrupting applications in production, and designed to automatically instantiate instances in response to increasing user demand. In short, microservices are drastically changing the way that applications are deployed and managed. This introduces a high level of complexity to network infrastructures because traditional applications are not going away. Applications will continue to be designed for both microservices and traditional 3-tier imple

Today’s workforce is increasingly nomadic. Employees use personal and company-owned devices desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones with various operating systems to access corporate resources over different networks from virtually anywhere. Roaming users and cloud-based applications have eroded the network perimeter where enterprises have traditionally focused their security controls. In the wake of this disruption, vendors offered myriad point products that solve only a portion of the security problem. These products usually require costly custom integrations and high management overhead to boot. Making matters worse, traditional security approaches can’t address an evolving threat landscape that includes ransomware, stealthy attacks that dwell in a customer’s environment for months, and threats targeting iOS and Android devices. In fact, the mobile workforce is more vulnerable than ever before.

Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Similarly, relying on your cloud service provider’s security services is insufficient; any provider will tell you that securing the cloud environment is a shared responsibility between cloud service provider and customer, and the responsibility for specifically securing web applications is the sole responsibility of the customer. And although the industry as a whole has become better at protecting lower-level network and server resources, as attackers look for targets, they are moving up the application stack.

Cloud has become a crucial foundation for digital transformation (DX) initiatives and is shaping the IT strategy of enterprises today. Companies are extending their IT infrastructure into the cloud for running business-critical applications, developing new applications, and delivering new cloud-based services. Applications are the lifeblood of modern enterprises. They are the foundation on which businesses maintain their existing revenue streams while examining ways to create new ones. A sound application strategy is a must for frms to be successful in expanding their competitive differentiation in the digital economy. Operating systems (OSs) provide a common foundational layer that enables IT to run current and new generations of applications in traditional IT environments, on its own private cloud, and in public clouds and utilize a variety of computing options such as bare metal, virtualization, and containerization. The increased reliance of IT on the cloud has accelerated the

Our client is a very well-known, long-established bank with over 13 million customers across the globe. Over the years, they had built up a large and complex technological legacy. The landscape included over 1,000 different applications residing on a complex architecture and a hybrid mix of technology, which made testing the non-production environment an increasingly difficult task for quality assurance (QA) teams. Testing environments were fragmented, and this was compounded by a lack of ownership, governance processes, and communication regarding the status of environment readiness; causing delays, extending time to market, and increasing cost.

More and more businesses are embracing workplace mobility and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) strategies as a method to reduce costs and stimulate productivity. These initiatives give employees, contractors, and business partners the power to remotely contribute, collaborate, and communicate with team members from familiar devices, anywhere around the world. To implement these strategies effectively however, IT teams must provide access to applications, business systems, collaboration platforms, and development environments without sacrificing end-user experiences, hindering their organization’s security posture, or inducing excessive costs. What many are finding is that traditional methods of desktop and application delivery and on-premises Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) often cannot live up to this task, as they introduce new challenges upon implementation.

Application performance management (APM) is an IT discipline that continues to evolve as new technologies appear. The new wave of microservices architecture and containerization has led to what is referred to as cloud-native development, and this approach has one of the fastest adoption rates of any new technology we have witnessed. With cloud-native environments there is the need to monitor and manage these new types of applications, but the challenge is that they are quite different from traditional monolithic systems. This report delves into what the differences are, how these affect how they are monitored, and how a new generation of vendors have stepped up and introduced novel solutions to meet these challenges. We also examine the incumbent leaders in the APM market that have transformed their solutions to expand and cover cloud-native environments.

Internet-of-things (IoT) is increasing in excitement across all industries as they look to provide innovation in their product and services, and monitor risks and costs in their business operations. But IoT is not a single technology. It is an ecosystem of human and non-human touchpoints that span across multiple technologies. This creates a dynamic and complex environment that is difficult to see and manage in scope. The traditional monitoring approach of watching dashboards, responding to alerts, and manually analyzing doesn’t work anymore. Today’s hyper-dynamic, highly distributed IoT application environments have become way too complex and move too quickly. The volume, velocity, and variety of information is simply more than humans can keep up with using traditional tools.
