At the center of every shopping experience is the payment process. The way that brands connect their products and services to their customers, and in turn receive their payments, is the foundation upon which shopping is built. Digital payments, both online and in-store, are transforming that foundation. 80% of Americans are now shopping through online channels on at least a monthly basis, and digital payments have become a primary stream of revenue for brands across all channels1. While offering digital payment options has the potential to simplify life for customers and increase conversion rates, they are creating an additional layer of complexity that is challenging to keep up with. Between the expanding number of digital payment technologies, the increasing number of devices payments can be completed on, and the continuous blurring of digital and physical buying experiences, it is critical to ensure payments will be successful for every person on every device and in every location.

For traditional banks, competing in an increasingly digital business environment is a challenge. And it’s getting tougher on several fronts. First, today’s digitally oriented customers expect banks to provide an ever-higher quality experience defined by speed and the flexibility to conduct business across many channels. They’ve grown accustomed to going online and transferring money between accounts, for example, and using their mobile device to make payments and check their account balance. These kinds of experiences have raised the bar in terms of customer expectations – and banks need to keep up, or risk losing customers. This is particularly true of millennial customers, as they have little regard for loyalty, which banks have traditionally relied on to build their business. Once frustrated by inconvenience, they don’t hesitate to switch banks – and thanks to the internet, this is now a fast, painless process.

Digital commerce is enabling businesses to rethink what they sell, how they sell, and where they sell. Increasingly, retailers in APAC face the combined challenges of more demanding customers, shrinking profitability, increased competition, and complex online-offline experiences. That’s why more retailers are adopting data-over-sound technology. This technology allows customers to make mobile payments using sound to communicate with payment devices like credit card readers, or kiosk machines. It also enables novel customer experiences, which allow retailers to drive in-the-moment sales, improve loyalty program stickiness, and eliminate queues, among other benefits. And because it doesn’t require the Internet, and works even on feature phones, it can be leveraged in a number of scenarios such in pop-up markets, food courts, concerts, and door-to-door deliveries, among others. Inside This Guide: • The top 5 ways retailers are using data-over-sound • 14 benefits for retailers • Why sound-based experiences will take over APAC
