Today’s organizations face a ballooning data management and risk problem. The use of laptops, tablets, workstations, servers and smartphones in the enterprise to create and store critical data is growing at an alarming rate. Many companies still rely on a legacy, platform-specific data backup solution, even though it doesn’t provide consistent backup across the enterprise. This outdated approach becomes especially risky when IT faces a data migration initiative. Whether migrating to a new version or brand new hardware on the client or server—organizations risk immense data loss and an expensive, intensive disaster recovery undertaking if they launch a data migration effort without first properly securing their data. Continuous, real-time data backup is the only viable solution for protecting all enterprise data while providing for a seamless migration process. But how do you achieve it?

Rapid changes in technology and software, and the nearly universal shift to electronically stored information (ESI), has made eDiscovery more complex and expensive. In a movement to simplify and standardize their procedures—and dissolve some of the extra tensions surrounding litigation—many organizations are bringing phases of the eDiscovery process in house, in particular legal hold. Among other benefits, Code42 eDiscovery simplifies legal hold management. Litigation preparation can be a large task crossing over many departments, but will consistently feature two main players: Legal and IT. This document focuses on those two groups, and aims to enable one to see the eDiscovery world through the point of view of one group—or the other. Read more to find out the details.

Today, hybrid cloud is increasingly the norm, and enterprises are challenged with ways to have visibility, manage and make use of all this data – both on-premises and in the cloud. While much attention has been given to primary data affecting mission-critical workloads, data for secondary workloads – backup, test/dev, disaster recovery, and archiving to name a few – have become siloed the same way application data has, leading to multiple point solutions to manage an increasing amount of data. This white paper looks at the evolution of these challenges and offers practical advice on ways to store, manage and move secondary data in hybrid cloud architectures while extracting the hidden value it can provide. Every 14 seconds. That’s how often analysts predict ransomware will attack a business this year.1 Despite the best efforts to thwart ransomware attacks, cyber criminals are innovative, and they continue to create new malware. This means more sophisticated and targeted ransomware attacks are coming—all with the same goal: Disrupt business operations in the hopes victims will pay to restore order. No industry is immune. And because enterprises are now even more attractive targets than consumers,2 your organization must proactively prepare for when, not if, cyber criminals come for your data.

Companies today are as distributed as their customer base, with branch offices and satellite locations scattered well beyond traditional boundaries. For many, these distributed sites are the face of the company to the customer, with most—if not all— customer interactions occurring in these locations and not in the corporate headquarters. Banks and finance centers, retail stores and even urgent care centers all fit within the category of the branch office, with each location connected to the corporate headquarters and, increasingly each other. Together, they make up the distributed enterprise. However, each location is its own entity and must be able to operate independently of headquarters to ensure business can continue even if one or other locations experience technical issues. Distributed locations, therefore, must be equipped to handle all manner of customer interactions – and evolving customer expectations—and do so in a way that anticipates what the customers want next. Retail has been transformed by technology in multiple ways, from the way customers interact with retailers to how products are offered and acquired. Indeed, the entire shopping experience has been redefined and expanded to enable customers to purchase products anytime, anywhere, with any device, from any number of retailers. Consumers’ changing shopping behaviors and their reliance on technology enables retailers to reach a wider swath of potential buyers, moving well beyond the borders of their physical store locations to new geographies and populations. That said, retailers must understand how to use technology effectively to draw in customers and entice them to purchase, as well as help them improve their operations and enable new, innovative ways to keep customers coming back.

Around-the-clock global operations, data growth, and server virtualization all together can complicate protection and recovery strategies. They affect when and how often you can perform backups, increase the time required to back up, and ultimately affect your ability to successfully restore. These challenges can force lower standards for recovery objectives, such as reducing the frequency of backup jobs or protecting fewer applications, both of which can introduce risk. High-speed snapshot technologies and application integration can go a long way toward meeting these needs, and they have quickly become essential elements of a complete protection strategy. But snapshot copies have often been managed separately from traditional backup processes. Features like cataloging for search and retrieval as well as tape creation usually require separate management and do not fully leverage snapshot capabilities. To eliminate complexity and accelerate protection and recovery, you need a solution

TMCC's Financial Aid Department (FA) stores about 14,000 hardcopy files, and processes approximately 7,000 new applications a year. FA workers were running out of space to house all of the files when they were told their office might be moved, resulting in the loss of their file room altogether. Since they are required by the U.S. Department of Education to keep files for four years (sometimes longer depending on a specific regulation) they knew converting to an electronic file system would save both time and money while serving their students better.

Businesses need to plan for unforeseen events that can disrupt productivity, impair the customer experience, and possibly even threaten a business’s existence. A disruption every business needs to plan for is any event that destroys valuable data, inhibits access to data, or causes downtime of core applications. Consider the staggering amount of information your company stores electronically. What if an unforeseen event destroyed all financial records, client contacts, and application data? You wouldn’t be able to send customers accurate invoices. Your marketing efforts might be undermined. You would lack key metrics for measuring quality, profitability, and more. The losses could be staggering. In every aspect of life, it’s smart to plan for unexpected events. That’s especially true for two plans every business must have: a disaster recovery plan and a business continuity plan.

Always-on Connections for Store Networks and Powering Intelligent Systems In the fast-paced world of retail, network reliability is everything—but so are security, agility, and cost-effectiveness. Retailers want it all, and they depend on their IT administrators to balance these needs. Whether it’s ensuring an always-on connection for store networks, powering intelligent systems aimed at swaying buyer behavior, or transmitting real-time analytics to inform marketing and inventory decisions, the bedrock of successful retailing is a network that can support the growing list of mission-critical applications dependent on secure Internet connectivity. In the past, finding a solution to balance these demands has been difficult at best. Less expensive wired options like DSL mean hours of downtime each month. Alternatives like T1 connections deliver more uptime but carry a price tag that usually puts large-scale distributed deployments out of reach.
