HRIS solutions designed for very large organizations can be costly to set up and maintain, and often require the services of an army of consultants to keep them operational. Systems designed for very small organizations concentrate on either HR functions such as attendance and compensation, or on benefits management, but usually lack the ability to integrate the two areas. To be a practical investment choice for a mid-tier organization, a satisfactory HRIS solution must have its HR and benefits functions highly integrated. It must be agile so it can easily be kept aligned with the constant change in compliance laws, and it must be robust and secure, built on a tried and true platform foundation.

For years, “tax-free online shopping” has brought customers to the web in droves, all while raising the ire of brick-and-mortar retailers claiming an unfair price advantage to sellers offering prices free of sales tax. At the center of these debates lies the small to medium business, attempting to navigate changing sales tax requirements, and facing increased scrutiny under these new rules. Sales tax compliance is becoming a sticky wicket, as state and local governments revise tax laws to increase revenue, and Congress considers granting states the authority to make remote sellers charge sales tax. This Definitive Guide lays out sales and use tax basics as well as commonly misunderstood elements of sales tax compliance, to provide you a one-stop reference for all things sales and use tax related. The last two sections include a state-by-state summary of sales tax rules and regulations, and a glossary of terms. Download this White Paper for more information.

Moving major, business-supporting applications to the cloud can be a challenge for a variety of reasons. You may have concerns about the physical migration of data, as data loss or business disruption stemming from a migration issue would be a disaster for the business. Security is another typical concern, as a data breach of your most sensitive applications—like SAP or Oracle— could prove highly damaging. Businesses today are faced with the almost insurmountable task of complying with a confusing array of laws and regulations relating to data privacy and security. These can come from a variety of sources: local, state, national, and, even, international law makers. This is not just a problem for big businesses. Even a small business with a localised geographic presence may be subject to laws from other states and, possibly, other nations by virtue of having a presence on the internet. In many instances, these laws and regulations are vague and ambiguous, with little specific guidance as to compliance. Worse yet, the laws of different jurisdictions may be, and frequently are, conflicting. One state or country may require security measures that are entirely different from those of another state or country. Reconciling all of these legal obligations can be, at best, a full time job and, at worst, the subject of fines, penalties, and lawsuits.
