This July 2015 Forrester Research report is provided compliments of HP. Modern application delivery leaders realize that their primary goal is to deliver value to the business and its customers, faster. For many, this is a significant shift from the past, when they primarily focused on cost control and efficiency. Today, they must connect the work they do and the results they produce to business outcomes. To do this, application development and delivery (AD&D) leaders use a new set of metrics that help them monitor and improve the value they deliver, based on feedback from business partners and customers. In this report, we highlight these new metrics that connect business outcomes to app delivery performance — as well as the practices and tools that modern application delivery teams and their AD&D leaders use to collect and report them.

Workforce analytics is a very significant development in human resources. It promises the potential for deeper understanding of the ways workers contribute to organizational performance. However, workforce analytics is not just about analyzing data to reveal exciting insights; it also requires the active involvement of a firm’s workers if the potential of analytics is to be fully realized. Without active employee participation, workforce analytics efforts face at best, restricted data sources and data sets that are incomplete and at worst, the risk of damaging employee relations and, ultimately, productivity. This white paper summarizes recommendations that will encourage enthusiasm for workforce analytics and active employee participation, using the FORT (Feedback, Opt-in, Reciprocal, Transparent) framework. The FORT criteria could prove particularly useful in European countries. This is because the 1995 European Union Data Protection Directive, along with certain local legislative pr

What defines cognitive manufacturing maturity? Our study found three stages of cognitive manufacturing maturity. We call those organizations in the earliest stage Observers, followed by Starters and Actives, respectively. These groups differ on two key characteristics: the presence of an overall strategy for cognitive manufacturing, and degree of strategic execution of multiple projects that enable higher project success and significantly fewer failed projects. Strategy is the crucial enabler of higher maturity. How do manufacturers get beyond the obstacles and barriers to increase cognitive manufacturing maturity? The obstacles encountered by our respondents are tied to organizational maturity. Overcoming them is fundamental to increase cognitive manufacturing success. In this report, we’ll first describe cognitive computing and how it gives rise to cognitive manufacturing. Then, we’ll review specific study findings and recommend actions for electronics executives.

The cyberattacks of 2017 proved more numerous, sophisticated, and ruthless than in years past. Threat actors, armed with knowledge stolen from the CIA and tools lifted from the NSA, demonstrated an elevated level of proficiency. WannaCry and NotPetya, two prominent threats from last year, successfully exploited these stolen assets in their assault on systems worldwide. As 2017 progressed, new opportunities developed in ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS), opening the gates of malware-for-profit to everyone. Advancements in fileless attacks provided new ways for threats to hide from once reliable detection methods. Malware features such as polymorphism continued to play a powerful role in evading traditional defenses. The victims of cybercrime ranged from private businesses to the fundamental practices of democracy. France and the United States saw significant data breaches during their recent presidential elections. Several high-profile companies lost their customers’ personally identifiable information to cyberattacks, blemishing their brands and costing them untold millions in recovery operations. This report contains an overview of the threat trends and malware families Cylance's customers faced in 2017. This information is shared with the goal of assisting security practitioners, researchers, and individuals in our collective battle against emerging and evolving cyberthreats.

The fax market is changing significantly though not in the way predicted by many. Far from an inevitable decline brought about by the emergence of e-mail, the demand for fax, particularly from larger companies, is actually growing. The way that fax is managed within the business is also undergoing a significant period of transition.

The introduction of e-mail and its exponential expansion into every aspect of business life presented a significant challenge to the fax industry and for some observers it was a foregone conclusion that fax was destined for a rapid demise. It is interesting to note, therefore, that fax has actually continued on a steady growth path that is predicted to continue well into the future.

When designed well, a data lake is an effective data-driven design pattern for capturing a wide range of data types, both old and new, at large scale. By definition, a data lake is optimized for the quick ingestion of raw, detailed source data plus on-the-fly processing of such data for exploration, analytics, and operations. Even so, traditional, latent data practices are possible, too. Organizations are adopting the data lake design pattern (whether on Hadoop or a relational database) because lakes provision the kind of raw data that users need for data exploration and discovery-oriented forms of advanced analytics. A data lake can also be a consolidation point for both new and traditional data, thereby enabling analytics correlations across all data. With the right end-user tools, a data lake can enable the self-service data practices that both technical and business users need. These practices wring business value from big data, other new data sources, and burgeoning enterprise da

While many who invest in Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software benefit greatly, some do not. Research has revealed a number of pitfalls that end users should avoid when evaluating and implementing DCIM solutions. Choosing an inappropriate solution, relying on inadequate processes, and a lack of commitment / ownership / knowledge can each undermine a chosen toolset’s ability to deliver the value it was designed to provide. This paper describes these common pitfalls and provides practical guidance on how to avoid them.

IT virtualization, the engine behind cloud computing, can have significant consequences on the data center physical infrastructure (DCPI). Higher power densities that often result can challenge the cooling capabilities of an existing system. Reduced overall energy consumption that typically results from physical server consolidation may actually worsen the data center’s power usage effectiveness (PUE). Dynamic loads that vary in time and location may heighten the risk of downtime if rack-level power and cooling health are not understood and considered. Finally, the fault-tolerant nature of a highly virtualized environment could raise questions about the level of redundancy required in the physical infrastructure. These particular effects of virtualization are discussed and possible solutions or methods for dealing with them are offered.
