Digital transformation on the 3rd Platform continues to present unprecedented opportunities and challenges for enterprise networks and the IT professionals who operate them. Indeed, the requirements associated with cloud computing have already reverberated through datacenter networking, with software-defined networking (SDN) arising as an architectural approach that provided the network with the agility and responsiveness that it lacked previously but has come to require. Now, the focus is turning to how the WAN must change to accommodate the requirements of cloud applications and services. Fortunately, technologies such as hybrid WAN and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) are coming to the rescue, giving enterprise IT the means to allow the WAN to meet these challenges directly.
Network readiness is an important factor in any new IT project at companies both large and small. New applications seem to require more bandwidth than the applications that they replace. Interconnecting three or more sites across a metro or wide area network has traditionally been accomplished via a hub and spoke network topology using Private Lines, Frame Relay or IP VPNs over the Internet. Ethernet services support hub and spoke topologies but also support an “any-to-any” network topology similar to a LAN but delivered over a wide area. This latter capability is unique to Ethernet services and cannot be cost effectively delivered using legacy point-to-point technologies such as Frame Relay or IP VPNs.
This paper discusses two options for multi-site connectivity using Ethernet services. One option discusses the classical hub and spoke topology using Ethernet Virtual Private Lines (EVPL). The other option discusses the “any-to-any” topology using an Ethernet Private LAN (EP-LAN) service. Through examples, the paper illustrates the capabilities of the two approaches and their benefits.
