Customer experience might be a relatively new term, but the concept goes back millennia. In Ancient Greece, the retailer’s relationship with the customer was deep and personal, and that’s because the seller knew almost every customer extremely well. What happened? Mass distribution and mass marketing, for one. But now, thanks to technology, we are returning to being able to form a deep, personal relationship with the customer. Read this eBook to learn about the retailer’s journey from knowing the customer to depersonalization to using powerful technology to go back to the types of vendor-buyer relationships that existed thousands of years ago.

The global financial crisis of 2008 still reverberates today. Sluggish economic growth, stricter regulatory requirements and rapidly changing consumer behavior are placing unprecedented demands on the banking industry. In recent years, banks – particularly those with substantial retail operations – have relied on the lethargy of their customers to maintain their business. Customer loyalty has been based more on proximity of local branches and convenience of ATM networks than the quality of customer care or products and services priced and tailored to a bank’s best customers. In response to the financial crisis, banks have focused on wringing complexity and costs from their systems – exacerbated by mergers and acquisitions – while dealing with new and tighter regulations. Yet, their traditional “one-size-fits-all” mass-marketing approach to customers has remained constant.

No longer able to rely on mass marketing to drive in-store sales, EMI Music had to figure out who, exactly, was downloading its artists' music, and how to maximize communications with those consumers to strengthen relationships and drive more revenue. EMI Music opted for enterprise marketing software from Neolane that would help the company better capture consumer information from multiple sources and integrate its disparate CRM and customer analytics applications.

When 83 percent of online consumers participate in social
media, it is no surprise that, like bees to honey, marketers are following suit. According to a recent IBM® Unica® survey of marketers, 47 percent of respondents say they currently use social media marketing tactics; in North America, that number jumps to 58 percent. Yet, for all the rush, many marketers are wondering, “where’s the gold?” The IBM Unica survey found that 48 percent of marketers admit that their social media marketing efforts are totally siloed, frustrating their attempts to create richer customer relationships.

Many B2B marketing professionals are happy with a 2% response on their mailings. Others are thrilled to get a 0.5% click-thru-rate on their email marketing campaign. If that’s you, you are probably using mass direct marketing techniques; not the relationship marketing possible with today’s targeted direct marketing technologies.
Mass mailing, mass emails or SMS blasts - ask any business to consumer(B2C) marketing professional what they think of them and they will probably tell you there's been a shift away from such indiscriminate approaches in favor of more targeted campaigns. And they'll tell you that the main reason for this shift is that customers are more demanding; asking to be recognized as individuals and expecting communications to be relevant to their unique
lifestyles, wants and needs.
There are myriad software products, from complete CRM platforms that offer analytics to standalone or add-on software products that focus solely on analytics. There are analytics apps that can be added to your existing CRM platform. Or there’s the option to outsource analytics to a growing number of service providers.
“The technologies are changing rapidly. There are a zillion startups offering either new tools or technologies, so it is kind of hard to navigate,”Mike Gualtieri, an analystfor Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass., said in a recent webcast on analytics. “There isn’t just one platform that you’re going to need.
There’s a whole ecosystem of platforms.”
Having the right people on staff who know how to use the technology is equally important, analysts say. Analytics aren’t just for statisticians anymore—they’re used by sales, marketing and customer service teams in daily decision making.
