Part 2 in our Partnering with Certainty Webinar Series, "Customer Demands at the Edge." In our last webinar, we discussed how trends & technologies like IoT and its many applications have helped drive an Always On, Always Connected mentality that has completely evolved customer experience standards. These demands are driving a need for resiliency in local edge environments, meaning compute & storage capacity is now coming back on premise for many applications – especially in industries like Healthcare, Retail, Finance, and Education. In other words, this highly distributed access layer is now becoming a compute layer – one that is mission-critical to delivering a flawless (or at least acceptable) customer experience. These environments are often make-shift wiring closets (janitor’s closets, back rooms, etc.) with no dedicated IT staff per each location. More than ever before, Healthcare, Retail, Finance, and Education customers are turning to solution providers to be that “dedicated IT staff” to find and fix problems before they start, so that the customer (or patient, or student) experience they’re working to provide remains a good one. APC by Schneider Electric has: Connected Products making it easy to remotely monitor your customers’ environments Including our NEW Smart-UPS with APC SmartConnect – the industry’s first cloud-connected UPS! Part 3 in our Partnering with Certainty Webinar Series, "Customer Demands at the Edge." As distributed edge environments become more critical, physical security becomes more important. Nobody would leave their data center wide open for anyone to enter, but that’s exactly how many organizations treat their edge computing sites. Often, they consist of a rack or two of gear in a non-dedicated location, perhaps a janitor’s closet, with little to no physical security. Fill out your information and click "Register" to watch the third event in our Partnering with Certainty Webinar Series, “Customer Demands at the Edge: Protect me from Downtime!” This webinar originally aired on November 9th, 2017. In this webinar, we discuss physical security best practices, including environmental issues such as temperature and humidity monitoring. We also update partners on the physical security features of the latest APC racks and the NetBotz line of security and environmental appliances, cameras and sensors.

As enterprises large and small shift their information to the cloud, an explosion of SaaS tools are making it easier than ever for employees to collaborate and innovate. Much of this sharing is being done across time zones and physical locations, by workers who are telecommuting, working in shared or public spaces, and from open networks. Information is stored on central, third-party servers that are accessible across the company and the world by anyone with an internet connection. As a result, online security is increasingly being pushed to the forefront as a major corporate expense. Yet, 89% of the global information workforce lack clarity on how security applies to the cloud. “Data is suddenly everywhere, and so are the number of people, access points and administrators who can control – or worse, copy – the data." Selecting an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider can be a complex exercise that involves an array of considerations including business needs, budget, and application requirements. Buyers frequently respond to this complexity by filtering vendors based on variables that are more easily comparable, usually product features, location, and price. By contrast, performance, which is a critical factor to ensuring fit with business needs and ultimately satisfaction with the service, is often ignored. Virtual machine (VM) performance can be challenging to assess because it can vary drastically across vendors, instance sizes and prices, as well as in terms of a particular application’s unique requirements.

How can IT achieve the flexibility and agility it needs to offer multiple types of applications in multiple locations? Just as enterprises take advantage of applications hosted in multiple locations (i.e., public clouds, private clouds, or SaaS applications), they take advantage of different networks for different reasons (i.e. performance, backup, remote access). These could be MPLS links, ATM links, traditional Internet connections, or VPN lines. Enterprises, in effect, are already building hybrid networks, and those combined with the elements of hybrid clouds create the hybrid enterprise.

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Download the white paper to learn more.

Corporate data spreads across an ever-growing number of applications. Users (employees, contractors, partners, and customers) access those applications over a wide range of devices. Those devices take different forms: desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches. Each device may use a different operating system. The locations from where people access your data can be on-premises or off, and in any number of places around the globe. Data, users, apps, devices, locations—the sheer number of permutations and combinations is mind-boggling. This complex nature of today’s IT environment opens security gaps and exposes your business to undue risk. To illustrate, try to envision all the permutations and possible entry points for risk in your organization. Imagine that you have 400 users, each using 25 apps. When you multiply those together, that’s 10,000 potential access permissions to manage. Access permissions change as users come and go, roles change, new apps are added, and

The increase in sophisticated, targeted security threats by both external attackers and malicious insiders have made it extremely difficult for organizations to properly protect critical and sensitive information. The task of protecting these assets has only grown harder as IT environments have become more complex and widely distributed across geographic locations and in the cloud. Many recent high-profile breaches have one thing in common: They were accomplished through the compromise of passwords. In many cases, end-user passwords are initially hacked through various social engineering techniques. Then permissions are escalated to gain access to more privileged accounts — the keys to the kingdom. This unauthorized access can easily go undetected for weeks or even months, allowing hackers to see and steal information at their convenience. Unfortunately, many IT users lack a full understanding of how privileged accounts function, as well as the risks associated with their compromise an

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already begun to improve targeting, segmentation, media buying and planning in the advertising industry. AI algorithms can extract complex patterns from vast numbers of data points, and in so doing, are able to self-correct and learn patterns. The revenue potential that improved personalization, segmentation and targeting that AI provides to marketers is huge. At HERE Technologies, we are placing AI and machine learning at the center of our products and services. We see the opportunity in automated machine learning to enrich the targeting and effectiveness of mobile advertising campaigns in real time. But the outcome of implementing such technology depends on the quality of data being fed into it from the outset. AI wouldn’t be as helpful if it’s being used alongside questionable location data or audience data. HERE’s location data provides a strong thread that can be woven throughout every stage of the media buying process, offering more context and
