The future of financial services is under pressure from profound digital disruption. Across the globe, there are forces, both regulatory and customer-led, that open up the market to new entrants and disrupt what customers are buying — and how. The advent of Open Banking is one major influence, with Open APIs paving the way for third-party developers to build applications and services independently. This whitepaper outlines the challenges facing financial services firms and how a new approach to enterprise integration — API-led connectivity — can help banks and financial services firms not only survive, but thrive in an increasingly competitive future. Download this whitepaper to learn: What financial services firms should do about Open Banking, based on the experiences of the impact of PSD2 in Europe How an API strategy could define the future of financial services How a global bank successfully completed a digital transformation initiative

Once upon a time, several generations ago (in technology years), IT departments were internal departments, focused on maintaining infrastructure and services within the company. Some companies may have had external-facing services, particularly web services, but this was still generally a narrow and restricted area. IT wasn’t a revenue-generating or strategic department; it was a supporting environment viewed as a cost center. One of the outcomes of an infrastructure-focused environment is that developers lost a sense of what their code was doing. Release cycles were long, and changes were slow. A developer would work on something and throw the code into testing or operations, and it would be released months later. Because of that long lead time, engineers lost the joy of being a developer—of creating something and seeing it work in real life. One of the great, powerful changes with digital transformation and related cultural and technology changes like DevOps is that it reintroduce

Although many organizations still use traditional storage appliances, they don’t offer the agility needed by containerized environments. Containers are highly flexible and bring incredible scale to how apps and storage are delivered; traditional storage can be the bottleneck that stops this progress. The underlying storage should be highly elastic, easily provisioned by developers and admins, and, ideally, managed using the same orchestration framework (like Kubernetes).

Microservices are a type of software architecture where large applications are made up of small, self-contained units working together through APIs that are not dependent on a specific language. Each service has a limited scope, concentrates on a particular task and is highly independent. This setup allows IT managers and developers to build systems in a modular way. In his book, “Building Microservices,” Sam Newman said microservices are small, focused components built to do a single thing very well.

What exactly do we mean when we say "culture?" On the one hand, the focus on culture is about a shift from the traditional separation of duties where developers develop and operations operates.

With an estimated 9 million developers worldwide, the Java community is a very robust one. One of the most important uses of Java today is building applications for mobile devices using the Android operating system. In addition, Java remains incredibly popular for enterprise applications and client-server web applications, and is also a very common language of instruction in software development courses.

My name is Jonathan McCaffrey and I work on the infrastructure team here at Riot. This is the first post in a series where we’ll go deep on how we deploy and operate backend features around the globe. Before we dive into the technical details, it’s important to understand how Rioters think about feature development. Player value is paramount at Riot, and development teams often work directly with the player community to inform features and improvements. In order to provide the best possible player experience, we need to move fast and maintain the ability to rapidly change plans based upon feedback. The infrastructure team’s mission is to pave the way for our developers to do just that - the more we empower Riot teams, the faster features can be shipped to players to enjoy.

Hey all, this is David Press and Doug Lardo, two engineers working on improving the data center networking that enables online services at Riot. This article is the third part in a series on exactly that topic, which begins with an overview from Jonathan of a platform we called rCluster. This time we’ll be discussing our approach to Software Defined Networking (SDN), how we integrate SDN with Docker, and the new infrastructure paradigms that this combination has unlocked for us. If you’re curious about how SDN can transform infrastructure, how to empower developers to obtain and secure networking resources via an API, or how to get out of purchasing larger and larger specialized networking appliances, this article is for you.

Perhaps more than any programming language, Java continues to have a profound impact on how people navigate today’s world. Java’s functionality is responsible for setting a great deal of what users expect in terms of performance from their internet-accessible devices. The history of Java is more than two decades long and the language continues to grow and adapt in response to evolving consumer and business expectations. Throughout all of these changes, however, the performance of Java applications remains a paramount concern for developers.

Today, 75% of Twitter traffic and 65% of Salesforce.com traffic comes through APIs. But APIs are not just for the social Web. According to ProgrammableWeb.com, the number of open APIs being offered publicly over the Internet now exceeds 2000—up from just 32 in 2005. Opening APIs up to outside developers enables many technology start-ups to become platforms, by fostering developer communities tied to their core data or application resources. This translates into new reach (think Twitter’s rapid growth), revenue (think Salesforce.com’s AppExchange) or end user retention (think Facebook).

OAuth puts the user in control of delegating access to an API. This allows one service to integrate with another service on behalf of that user. The same social Web providers who popularized the pattern of exposing an API to enable third-party developers to enrich their platforms were the first ones to apply such delegated authorization mechanisms. OAuth was defined in 2006, to standardize mechanisms of this kind.

The application economy has forced businesses to transform. To capture new growth opportunities, enterprises are opening up and sharing select data and applications with developers, partners, mobile devices, the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the byproducts of this transformation is the discovery that legacy data has value in the application economy—so much so that new revenue opportunities emerge as this data is used in new ways.

One way to shift testing practices earlier in your software lifecycle is by using multi-layered visual models to specify requirements in a way where all ambiguity is inherently removed. With unambiguous and complete requirements, developers introduce less defects into their code and manual test cases, automated test scripts and required test data can be automatically generated based on the requirement, without manual intervention.

In a series of articles Paul Gerrard, a testing guru and consultant, discusses a range of testing topics. Test models are fundamental to testing and, in this article, Paul talks about the art of creating and using models. If testers are “shifting left,” pairing with developers or at least working more closely with developers, testers (and developers) need to be able to create models, learn how to articulate and share them, and support better collaboration.
