This white paper examines key approaches to application modernization and evolution for certain IBM mainframe applications with long life spans. It discusses the challenges of legacy applications and the available modernization approaches to handle these challenges. The paper also analyzes in some depth specific approaches that keep application logic largely intact or allow it to evolve incrementally and productively.

The clear benefits of agile development—better collaboration, incremental delivery, early error detection and the elimination of unnecessary work—have made it the default approach for many teams. Agile methods are also being adopted by systems engineering teams to deliver the same benefits. Some developers have questioned whether requirements fall into the category of unnecessary work, and can be cut down or even completely eliminated. Meanwhile, teams developing complex products, systems and regulated IT continue to have requirements-driven legacy processes. So how does requirements management fit in an agile world? This paper argues that requirements management can bring significant value to agile development in regulated IT and complex product development projects, and sets out the characteristics of an effective requirements management approach in an agile environment.

Agile methods have proven effective for software development and have grown in popularity across a number of software disciplines. Agile methods build capabilities using an iterative approach, as opposed to traditional approaches where requirements are defined early and designs are completed in full before a single line of code is written. Agile incrementally defines requirements with priorities, partial component designs and working systems that evolve through iterations called sprints. The question remains, however: Do the 12 agile principles apply to more than just software? Agile principles are in line with lean management’s approach. Given that, it seems as though agile principles should directly apply beyond software development. However, the answer is not straightforward, because differences between software and physical components affect how agile is applied. Let’s explore how agile can be applied in light of these differences.

Cisco made Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise Module (APIC-EM) generally available on November 3rd, 2015. It is an SDN controller that supports apps that make WAN and access networks easier to deploy and manage. Cisco’s focus on a low-risk, incremental approach to adopting SDN will appeal to its user-base. Cisco needs to describe the policy control capabilities benefits of APIC-EM, and also highlight its power as a platform and its ability to distinguish apps from point solution offerings from many other companies with competitive features.

Applications are evolving at an ever-faster pace. These applications are not discrete islands; they build on a complex, interconnected set of components that includes disparate technologies, developers, deployment topologies and organizations. Developers must deliver high-quality applications while limiting their testing expenses. In this challenging environment, a combination of automated integration testing and test virtualization can enable test teams to improve software quality and keep up with the rate of change. This whitepaper helps address these needs by describing the benefits that can be gained through a proactive and continuous approach to integration testing with IBM® Rational® test automation solutions.

Modern mobile applications connect systems-of-engagement (mobile apps) with systems-of-record (traditional IT) to deliver new and innovative business value. But the lifecycle for development of mobile apps is also new and different. Emerging trends in mobile development call for faster delivery of incremental features, coupled with feedback from the users of the app "in the wild". This loop of continuous delivery and continuous feedback is how the best mobile apps keep their users engaged and also produce the most compelling apps in the market. Join us for this webcast to learn about how IBM offers a solution that enables our clients to use continuous quality as an effective means of mobile application development. This white paper describes software as the invisible thread that links product parts into an intelligent whole. It examines software delivery for smart products and strategies for evolving software development into a business process. Agile development has become a cornerstone of most software development organizations. Marked by iterative processes that deliver incremental value over time, agile development has enabled organizations to manage software complexity more effectively and to improve quality and time to market compared with previous development processes.

The complexity and number of logons employees must manage on a daily basis are increasing sources of frustration and lost productivity. The time wasted entering, changing, writing down, forgetting and resetting passwords might be in small increments, but they are frequent and add up to a significant consumption of employee time. When employees are locked out because they’ve forgotten their passwords, they cannot perform their jobs.
