High Density Interconnect (HDI) is being used more often to meet the growing need for more complex designs in smaller form factors. Beyond some of the more obvious electrical effects of using smaller vias, there is also an impact to the power integrity of a board using HDI. This includes different effects of mounted inductances of decoupling capacitors, changes in plane performance due to reduction in perforation from chip pinouts, and the inherent plane-capacitance changes from using dielectrics of various thicknesses. This paper will examine and quantify these effects, using numerous design examples, including a large conventional through-hole design board that was reduced using HDI.

In today’s competitive embedded markets, manufacturers need to find ways to differentiate without adversely impacting development time and cost. This is particularly true in relation to embedded devices that are designed for use by consumers. As such products become more sophisticated, user interaction via traditional switches, dials, and basic displays becomes less desirable for a number of reasons.

"As the number of enhancements to various Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) has increased over the past year, so too has the complexity of determining which language is best for a particular design. Many designers and organizations are contemplating whether they should switch from one HDL to another. This paper compares the technical characteristics of three, general-purpose HDLs.

When designed well, a data lake is an effective data-driven design pattern for capturing a wide range of data types, both old and new, at large scale. By definition, a data lake is optimized for the quick ingestion of raw, detailed source data plus on-the-fly processing of such data for exploration, analytics and operations. Even so, traditional, latent data practices are possible, too. Organizations are adopting the data lake design pattern (whether on Hadoop or a relational database) because lakes provision the kind of raw data that users need for data exploration and discovery-oriented forms of advanced analytics. A data lake can also be a consolidation point for both new and traditional data, thereby enabling analytics correlations across all data. To help users prepare, this TDWI Best Practices Report defines data lake types, then discusses their emerging best practices, enabling technologies and real-world applications. The report’s survey quantifies user trends and readiness f

Interest in cloud computing over the last several years has been phenomenal. For cloud providers, public or private, it will transform business and operational processes, streamlining customer on-ramping and time to market, facilitating innovation, providing cost efficiencies, and enabling the ability to scale resources on demand. Cisco's Virtualized Multi-tenant Data Center (VMDC) system defines an end-to-end architecture, which an organization may reference for the migration or build out of virtualized, multi-tenant data centers for new cloud-based service models such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

SAP HANA is a powerful, in-memory computing platform that streamlines business suite applications, analytics, planning, predictive analysis, and sentiment analysis on a single platform, so businesses can operate in real time. The design approach for enterprise-level solutions involving SAP HANA, and the best practices surrounding them, isn’t intrinsically different from the approach to any other enterprise-level solution for technology implementations. This paper is written to address those elements of good solution design and apply them to the SAP landscape, with particular focus on the SAP HANA element.

In the wake of the recent Sony data breach, customer and company privacy issues have become a hot topic in the media and the tech sector. The Sony incident and other widely covered consumer-facing data breaches experienced by Target, Home Depot, JPMorgan Chase and others have had a significant financial impact on these companies. Experts are projecting that both the number of incidents and the cost of dealing with data breaches will increase in 2015. To combat these attacks, businesses must respond with a heightened awareness of cybersecurity as well as increased spending on enterprise security as needed. Designating high level executives to lead security and hiring certified security experts are among the best practices for stronger IT security in 2015 and beyond. Download to learn more!

Since the global financial crisis of 2008, stress tests have taken on growing importance and prominence in financial institution supervision and regulation. These tests, designed to measure an institution’s ability to maintain capital buffers and withstand extreme economic shocks, were imposed initially, and primarily, on the biggest multinational firms – those designated global significantly important banks (G-SIBs) or financial institutions (G-SIFIs). However, the circle for supervisory stress testing has widened to include a growing number of banks as defined by domestic jurisdictions – in the United States, for example, down to banks with $10 billion in assets under the Dodd-Frank Act Stress Test (DFAST) rule. What’s more, stress tests and their underlying scenarios can be of considerable value as a strategic management tool to a financial services company of virtually any type or size.
