Cooling for IT wiring closets is rarely planned and typically only implemented after failures or overheating occur. Historically, no clear standard exists for specifying sufficient cooling to achieve predictable behavior within wiring closets. An appropriate specification for cooling IT wiring closets should assure compatibility with anticipated loads, provide unambiguous instruction for design and installation of cooling equipment, prevent oversizing, maximize electrical efficiency, and be flexible enough to work in various shapes and types of closets. This paper describes the science and practical application of an improved method for the specification of cooling for wiring closets.

When working with data center and commercial facility electrical systems, shocks of 100mA to more than 2,000mA are possible—definitely in the realm of serious harm to humans and property. Energized electrical equipment also presents the risk of arc flash caused by electrical faults that produce powerful explosions. When dealing with commercial and industrial electrical systems, such as uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and their batteries, data center and facilities managers need to be aware of these risks, especially since some repair and maintenance procedures require working with a unit that is still energized. There are ways to minimize the risks to employees, equipment and the field technician performing the service. This paper answers some common questions about UPS maintenance, how to reduce the risks associated with servicing UPSs and batteries, and how to qualify a UPS service provider.

For advanced signaling over high-loss channels, designs today are using equalization and several new measurement methods to evaluate the performance of the link. Both simulation and measurement tools support equalization and the new measurement methods, but correlation of results throughout the design flow is unclear. In this paper a high performance equalizing serial data link is measured and the performance is compared to that predicted by simulation. Then, the differences between simulation and measurements are discussed as well as methods to correlate the two.

High Density Interconnect (HDI) is being used more often to meet the growing need for more complex designs in smaller form factors. Beyond some of the more obvious electrical effects of using smaller vias, there is also an impact to the power integrity of a board using HDI. This includes different effects of mounted inductances of decoupling capacitors, changes in plane performance due to reduction in perforation from chip pinouts, and the inherent plane-capacitance changes from using dielectrics of various thicknesses. This paper will examine and quantify these effects, using numerous design examples, including a large conventional through-hole design board that was reduced using HDI.

Buy-and-hold strategies can actually add costs to the datacenter, as systems age in place. Not only do hardware maintenance and software maintenance fees rise, over time – but the aging of applications also costs the organization money. Investing in a transition from POWER5 to POWER7 resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of more than 150 percent over three years.An insightful and and compelling discussion by IDC that reviews the primary reason for maintaining current systems -- Return on Investment. IDC studied IBM Power Systems sites that remained on the POWER5 platform long after its initial introduction in 2004. When comparisons to the succeeding generation of POWER7 are made, customers have found that the increase in scalability and performance of POWER7 systems, combined with a reduction in server "footprint" size and overall electrical requirements, resulted in significant reductions in ongoing costs, or opex, per 100 end users supported.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the measurement of severe pyroshock events is the acceleration offset that almost invariably occurs. Dependent on its magnitude, this can result in large, low-frequency errors in both shock response spectra (SRS) and velocity-based damage analyses. Fortunately, recent developments in accelerometer technology, signal conditioning, and data acquisition systems have reduced these errors significantly. Best practices have been demonstrated to produce offset errors less than 0.25% of Peak-Peak value in measured near-field pyrotechnic accelerations: a remarkable achievement. This paper will discuss the sensing technologies, including both piezoelectric and piezoresistive, that have come together to minimize these offsets.
