DDoS attacks can impair your website, tarnish your brand, and impact your bottom line. Conventional security products like firewalls and intrusion prevention systems and newer cloud-based scrubbing services can’t protect your DNS infrastructure against today’s increasingly sophisticated attacks. The best way to defend against DDoS attacks is to trust the operation of your DNS infrastructure to a managed service provider that lives and breathes DNS. Best-of-breed managed DNS providers operate global anycast networks that mitigate DDoS threats to keep your online business up and running.

Secondary DNS (sometimes referred to as multi-DNS) operates in an “always on” manner to complement your existing infrastructure as an additional authoritative DNS service. When an end user’s recursive server initiates a DNS request, both the “primary” DNS service and the “secondary” DNS will respond as soon as they receive the request. The response that reaches the recursive server first will be passed back to the end user, completing their request.

The DNS is an often-overlooked protocol. Historically, many companies believed they could either run their own DNS service in-house or simply use a bundled option provided by their hosting or CDN provider. However, with the rise in DDoS attacks and continued migration to the cloud, the mission-critical nature of the DNS has become quite apparent to companies around the world. As a result, many are searching for a managed DNS provider.

Every user’s first interaction with your website begins with a series of DNS queries. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed internet database that maps human-readable names to IP addresses, ensuring users reach the correct website when entering a URL. DNS mappings are maintained in special-purpose servers called DNS nameservers. When a user enters your company’s URL, a DNS query is routed to a DNS nameserver containing the address mappings for your company’s internet domain.

In this eBook, we’ll make the case for why you need to rethink DNS from several different and important perspectives. The first is to rethink your DNS choices. Choices around solutions, vendors and configurations that were made several years ago may no longer be optimal in today’s environment. The second is to rethink the importance of DNS for building digital resilience, including the need for a secondary DNS configuration. The third is to rethink the value of DNS as it has evolved to be so much more than simple domain name resolution. Modern DNS with intelligent response capabilities continues to open up new opportunities for traffic steering across hybrid resources.

Today’s network edge is increasingly taking on a critical role in connecting users to the digital content and web services that they need to reach. This is driving a new approach to load balancing that starts at the edge. Powered by DNS, edge-based global load balancing (GLB) steers user traffic to destination endpoints based on IT-defined policies. GLB works independently or in concert with site-based, or on premises, load balancing technologies in a “federated” system. This approach applies load balancing and traffic steering policies at each layer from the user edge to the host—whether virtual or physical—where the request is actually served.

Before Bad Things Happen – Be Prepared Providing a great user experience is always the goal, and the best way to achieve that is by having a well-thought-out digital business continuity strategy. You can’t always know what type of disruption you’ll face next, but you can be sure that there will be one. It may come in the form of a broken connection but, even more likely, the availability of the application or host. DNS active failover ensures real-time failover to healthy endpoints, allowing you to extend your business continuity solution to the user edge.

DDoS attacks are the primary threat to the availability of your network. In 2014, the number of DDoS attacks continues its trend upward in both size and complexity. Today, attacks topping 100Gbps have become common. So have complex threats such as application-layer attacks against DNS and encrypted Web services. Taxing security teams even more is the rise in multi vector attacks which target applications, existing stateful infrastructure like Firewalls and IPS devices and upstream connectivity, all in a single sustained attack.

Attacks have many phases. Before launching, the attacker needs to stage internet infrastructure to support each phase. Two early phases are to redirect or link to a malicious web domain or send a malicious email attachment. For the former, most attacks leverage exploit kits (e.g. Angler) as the first stage before dropping the final payload. Cisco Umbrella effectively blocks initial exploit and phishing domains. Unlike appliances, our cloud security platform protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protection extends to every device connected to the network — even IoT. Umbrella truly is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere. Why Cisco Umbrella is the simplest decision you can make to improve your company’s security. You have to make some serious security decisions when you’re an IT leader. That’s because both the volume and sophistication of attacks are intensifying relentlessly — and it’s clear that conventional defenses alone are no longer adequate. More effective blocking of attackers is particularly important because under-the-radar attacks are wreaking havoc on enterprises that rely on antivirus products, firewalls, and sandboxing alone. Umbrella is a proven service provider whose security services are completely nondisruptive. Download this whitepaper to find out more.

Today’s security appliances and agents must wait until malware reaches the perimeter or endpoint before they can detect or prevent it. OpenDNS arrests attacks earlier in the kill chain. Enforcing security at the DNS layer prevents a malicious IP connection from ever being established or a malicious file from ever being downloaded. This same DNS layer of network security can contain malware and any compromised system from exfiltrating data. Command & control (C2) callbacks to the attacker’s botnet infrastructure are blocked over any port or protocol. Unlike appliances, the cloud service protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protects every device connected to the network — even IoT. It is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere.

Users are working off-hours, off-network, and off-VPN. Are you up on all the ways DNS can be used to secure them? If not, maybe it’s time to brush up. More than 91% of malware uses DNS to gain command and control, exfiltrate data, or redirect web traffic. Because DNS is a protocol used by all devices that connect to the internet, security at the DNS layer is critical for achieving the visibility and protection you need for any users accessing the internet. Learn how DNS-layer security can help you block threats before they reach your network or endpoints.
