Lessons from the field on managing data science projects and portfolios
The ability to manage, scale, and accelerate an entire data science discipline increasingly separates successful organizations from those falling victim to hype and disillusionment.
Data science managers have the most important and least understood job of the 21st century.
This paper demystifies and elevates the current state of data science management. It identifies best practices to address common struggles around stakeholder alignment, the pace of model delivery, and the measurement of impact.
There are seven chapters and 25 pages of insights based on 4+ years of working with leaders in data science such as Allstate, Bayer, and Moody’s Analytics:
Introduction: Where we are today and where we came from
Goals: What are the measures of a high-performing data science organization?
Challenges: The symptoms leading to the dark art myth of data science
Diagnosis: The true root-causes behind the dark art m

MBSI was providing approximately 800 virtual desktops to their employees using VMware Horizon with View and 8 VMware ESXi hosts and they were running an additional 140 virtual servers using 5 VMware ESXi hosts – all on a Tegile Hybrid SAN.
“It was shortly after we converted from ICD-9 diagnosis codes to ICD-10 codes that performance for the VDI desktops began to suffer noticeably,” explained Shawn Wood, Assistant Manager of Systems Administration, MBSI. “We have relied on Xangati for a number of years now to help us quickly see where bottlenecks are in a short period of time. It's an important part of maintaining the integrity of our infrastructure.”

Detecting and preventing errors that threaten patient safety is a closed-loop process that begins at the point of care, extends to independent laboratories, and then back to the caregiver. Sample identification and results reporting errors can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment with deadly consequences. A 2006 Wall Street Journal article reported that while malpractice claims for pathology errors are relatively low, they are the second most costly. In addition to creating a serious risk to patient safety, sample misidentification creates significant financial implications. Redraws, retesting and additional treatment that result from sample errors cost the healthcare industry an estimated
$200 million to $400 million per year.

Maximizing patient safety and improving the quality of care is the ultimate goal for healthcare providers. Doing so requires staying within regulatory compliance, while also advancing staff retention and meeting fiscal constraints. Barcode technologies provide a “virtual voice” to patients, applications and workflows. Barcoding accomplishes this by laying a solid foundation for enhancing patient identification, providing visibility into medical practices, and driving efficiencies throughout healthcare applications, and is an integral part of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption. Small-to-medium size businesses (SMB's) have limited IT staff and budgets, yet they still require a monitoring solution for cost-effective equipment diagnosis to maintain a healthy network. Use the following checklist to evaluate software vendors.
In this report, you will discover:
- Why spreadsheets are working against you and de-motivating your team
- A spreadsheet “health diagnosis” checklist
- How incentive plans can drive behavior with better accuracy and objectivity
If you're looking to decrease power consumption in your existing data center (and who isn't?), the first step should be a detailed diagnosis. If, on the other hand, you’re constructing a new data center, or expanding or upgrading your current center, it’s critical that energy efficiency is built in from the start. This short IBM video addresses both.
Over the past 20 years, Current Signature Analysis (CSA) has become an established tool for online fault analysis of AC Induction motors. Presently, very little research has been performed using current signature analysis on DC motors. This paper is a brief introduction to online fault diagnosis of DC motors using current signature analysis.
