Today's data centers are embarking down a path in which "old world" business, technology, and facility metrics are being pushed aside in order to provide unparalleled service delivery capabilities, processes, and methodologies. The expectations derived from today’s high-density technology deployments are driving service delivery models to extremes with very high service delivery capabilities adopted as baseline requirements within today’s stringent business models. Part of the "revolution" that is driving today's data center modeling to unprecedented high performance and efficiency levels is the fact that computer processing advances with regard to high-performance and smaller footprints have truly countered each other.

At Viavi Solutions® we’ve had the benefit of observing a number of hybrid cloud deployments up close. All sectors of IT users from small to large enterprises, governmental groups, and even cloud service providers (CSPs) who themselves have begun to offer managed cloud services from third-party platforms—touch the hybrid cloud environment. CIOs, especially, face new challenges in deploying or expanding their enterprise presence in the cloud. This white paper examines four critical areas—migration, security, costs, and visibility—where CIOs can make major differences in the successful execution of hybrid cloud strategies. We’ve listed 20 fundamental questions CIOs can discuss with both their internal deployment groups and their external CSP/system integrator in preparation for a migration to or an expansion of hybrid cloud services.

Given the evolution of past major advances in wireless-LAN technologies, it should come as no surprise that products based on the still-in-development IEEE 802.11ac standard are now appearing across the board, from residence to enterprise. Just as was the case with 802.11g and 802.11n, the standards-development process is now far enough along that the semiconductor community is shipping in volume, the Wi-Fi Alliance has been able to issue an initial interoperability specification, and system-vendor products offering up to 1.3 Gbps are now available at prices very close to those of 802.11n APs but with on the order of a 30% improvement in price/performance on a spectral-efficiency basis and from 100% to more than 200% in performance overall.

Another critical sign of the times is that the Internetdriven evolution of TV and video is now embraced, rather than spurned, by the TV establishment. HBO, CBS and others are touting new IP-delivered offerings. Charter Communications CEO Tom Rutledge says the number of programmers planning OTT deployments is good for the cable industry, which will have more flexibility in content bundling; and good for the consumer, who will have more choice. And discussing heightened competition for audiences and ad dollars in VARIETY, Josh Sapan, president-CEO of AMC Networks, referred to “an almost unstoppable trend for technology to facilitate consumer discretion and choice.”

Over the past few years, new IT infrastructure options for enterprise transactional applications have arisen thanks to numerous improvements in storage processing power and the robustness of networking protocols. SAN protocols are no longer the only option for IT storage administrations. VMware, Hyper-V, SQL, and even SAP and Oracle deployments have taken advantage of the benefits offered by NFS, and more recently SMB 3, network-attached storage (NAS) protocols. However, support for NAS protocols alone is not enough. EMC and Brocade understand that supporting enterprise applications requires delivering enterprise storage and networking capabilities to maximize resiliency and performance.

The fundamental reasons to move to a cloud computing environment are the business agility, high efficiency, scalability, and availability that the pooling of elastic computing resources provides, along with significant cost reductions and support for business growth. Oracle has invested deeply in developing a broad collection of cloud services with solutions at every layer of the technology stack.Customers who deploy these solutions in Oracle Cloud derive huge benefit from the fact that they have access to Oracle’s entire technology stack in the cloud, just as they did in on-premises deployments. This white paper explains how you, as an existing Oracle E-Business Suite customer, can take advantage of cloud computing right now, by exploiting the capabilities of Oracle’s Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings to support growth, enhance business agility, and reduce costs and risks.
