It has been obvious for some time that the power distribution system within the data center is the key opportunity to focus upon in order to actively manage the rising costs of power and more specifically, identify problems and waste in real-time. With future-thinking organizations sharing knowledge between Facilities and IT, the push for more intelligence within this rack-based power infrastructure has become urgent with higher rack power densities. In fact, proactive power management at all stages in the distribution chain within enterprise data centers has become the requirement to feed efficiency studies and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) style optimization initiatives.

In the broadening data center cost-saving and energy efficiency discussion, data center physical infrastructure preventive maintenance (PM) is sometimes neglected as an important tool for controlling TCO and downtime. PM is performed specifically to prevent faults from occurring. IT and facilities managers can improve systems uptime through a better understanding of PM best practices.

Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions. Server consolidation, cloud computing, virtualization, and the implementation of flash storage capabilities have all helped reduce server sprawl, along with associated staffing and facilities costs. Converged systems — which combine compute, storage, and networking into a single system — are particularly effective in enabling organizations to reduce operational and staff expenses. These software-defined systems require only limited human intervention. Code imbedded in the software configures hardware and automates many previously manual processes, thereby dramatically reducing instances of human error. Concurrently, these technologies have enabled businesses to make incremental improvements to customer engagement and service delivery processes and strategies.

To win the colocation race you need to be faster, reliable, innovative and efficient –all while making smarter design choices that will ensure positive returns. Customers are demanding 100% uptime and always-on connectivity –be it small enterprises to large Internet Giants–and colocation providers need to meet these expectations. The growing adoption of prefabricated data centers allows just that. With the undisputed benefits of prefab modules and building components(like speed or quality),colocation providers can manage their business today, and deploy faster in the future. Chris Crosby, CEO for Compass Datacenters, is well-known for his expertise in the data center industry. From its founding in 2012, Compass’ data center solutions have used prefabricated components like exterior walls and power centers to deliver brandable, dedicated facilities for colocation providers. Prefabrication is the central element of the company’s “Kit of Parts” methodology that delivers customizable data center solutions from the core to the edge. By attending this webinar, colocation providers will: • understand the flexibility and value delivered via the use of prefabricated construction • Hear the common misperceptions regarding prefabricated modules and data center components • learn how prefabricated solutions can provide more revenue generation capability than competing alternatives • know what key things to consider when evaluating prefabricated data center design

The explosion in IT demand has intensified pressure on data center resources, making it difficult to respond to business needs, especially while budgets remain flat. As capacity demands become increasingly unpredictable, calculating the future needs of the data center becomes ever more difficult. The challenge is to build a data center that will be functional, highly efficient and cost-effective to operate over its 10-to-20-year lifespan. Facilities that succeed are focusing on optimization, flexibility and planning—infusing agility through a modular data center design.

In this Technology Adoption Profile we explore the current state of replication in SMB IT departments and in particular the use of SAN-based replication. We find strong demand for both synchronous and asynchronous SAN-based replication, as well as the need to replicate data within the SMB’s own data center facilities, either to a colocated secondary array or to one within 5 km [approximately 3 miles](a campus or metro-style deployment). We also find that in order for SMBs to protect more data using replication, they need replication solutions that are non-disruptive, easy to use, and inexpensive.

As organizations pursue improvements in reliability and energy efficiency, power design in data centers gets substantial attention—particularly from facilities and engineering personnel. At the same time, however, many IT professionals tend to spend little time or energy on the specific products they use to deliver and distribute electrical power. In?rack power is often considered less strategically important than which servers or databases to deploy, and it is often one of the last decisions to be made in the overall design of the data center. But choosing the right in-rack power solutions can save organizations from potentially crippling downtime and deliver significant up-front and ongoing savings through improved IT efficiency and data center infrastructure management.

Today's data centers are embarking down a path in which "old world" business, technology, and facility metrics are being pushed aside in order to provide unparalleled service delivery capabilities, processes, and methodologies. The expectations derived from today’s high-density technology deployments are driving service delivery models to extremes with very high service delivery capabilities adopted as baseline requirements within today’s stringent business models. Part of the "revolution" that is driving today's data center modeling to unprecedented high performance and efficiency levels is the fact that computer processing advances with regard to high-performance and smaller footprints have truly countered each other.

This evolving technology promises faster deployment, lower costs and improved IT staff productivity. Hyperconverged data centers were once a niche technology that mostly appealed to organizations with specialized needs, such as streamlining the management of small and branch offices. Today, many enterprises are now recognizing the value of transitioning their conventional data centers into hyperconverged facilities. Gartner reports that by 2018 hyperconverged integrated systems will represent as much as 35 percent of total converged infrastructure shipments by revenue, up from a low single-digit base in 2015. This report covers the challenges of first generation deduplication technology and the advantages of next-gen deduplication products. Next generation Dedupe 2.0 systems use a common deduplication algorithm across all storage systems-whether they're smaller systems in branch offices or large data center storage facilities. That means no more reconstituting data as it traverses different storage systems, which saves bandwidth and improves performance.

When working with data center and commercial facility electrical systems, shocks of 100mA to more than 2,000mA are possible—definitely in the realm of serious harm to humans and property. Energized electrical equipment also presents the risk of arc flash caused by electrical faults that produce powerful explosions. When dealing with commercial and industrial electrical systems, such as uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and their batteries, data center and facilities managers need to be aware of these risks, especially since some repair and maintenance procedures require working with a unit that is still energized. There are ways to minimize the risks to employees, equipment and the field technician performing the service. This paper answers some common questions about UPS maintenance, how to reduce the risks associated with servicing UPSs and batteries, and how to qualify a UPS service provider.

When designing a power protection scheme for their data center, IT and facilities managers must ask themselves whether a distributed or centralized backup strategy makes more sense. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to that question. Companies must weigh each architecture’s advantages and disadvantages against their financial constraints, availability needs and management capabilities before deciding which one to employ. This white paper will simplify the decision-making process and lessen the potential weaknesses of whichever strategy you ultimately select.
