What you don't know could hurt your bottom line Let’s begin with a question: Do you know who is behind the wheel? The reality is that for many enterprises with employees who drive as part of their job, the answer is, “I think so,” or maybe, “no.” Driver risk management has recently become a top issue for many organizations since it directly affects budgets and the bottom line. The fact that there are more than 100 million people driving for work-related activities on U.S. roads and many of them have invalid, suspended or no driver’s license at all should be cause enough for concern. But combining this with the facts that: • most organizations’ budgets are at best flat • P&C insurance rates are rising 14% every 2 years • 90% of crashes are due to human error • there are fewer qualified drivers available today • the number of lawsuits around negligence are skyrocketing • and it becomes clear that understanding exposure to driver risk is imperative for every organization. So what do

Loss of life in traffic death accidents in the U.S. is on the same scale as 25 full Boeing 747s crashing and leaving no survivors, in six months. It is a stark statistic which explains why the US Department of Transportation and the National Safety Council want to eliminate traffic deaths in the US within 30 years with their Road to Zero campaign. HERE location intelligence already supports more than half of the new elements included in the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance on crash reporting In the U.S. alone HERE currently works with more than 20 departments of transport and several large cities on improving traffic safety. As the world’s leading location platform, HERE also supports the global drive to Vision Zero.

Everyone agrees that data is the lifeblood of any business. Just think how tense you get when your laptop crashes and you realize you have not saved that critical document. Or put yourself in the shoes of your company’s sales teams when they suddenly find themselves unable to access information related to a deal in the pipeline at the end of the quarter because it is corrupted or went missing because of a database or server issue. Data protection is—and always will be—a constant concern.

ITS technology is a general term. Two common and related forms of ITS communication technology using event stream processing are referred to as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to-infrastructure (V2X) in the US, and car-to-infrastructure (Car2X) in Europe. The two types of connected-car research and development programs often overlap and can be integrated. Car2X enables vehicle communication with the road transportation infrastructure and provides the ability to send or receive local information about traffic conditions, geo-markers (e.g. to identify pothole locations), road hazards, alerts, safety vehicles, etc. V2V focuses on connected-car technology and the anonymous communication of sensor data continuously transmitted to and from cars. Using event stream processing, this streaming data enables the real-time synthesis of information to communicate what will improve and promote driver safety, reduce crashes, and improve vehicle transportation efficiency.
