The car industry’s fortunes play an important part in the stability of the broader economy. Consumers shopping for and financing a new or used vehicle have more choices than ever before. Empowered by digital delivery channels such as self-service and mobile, individuals are now able to rapidly choose and the vehicle and loan that best fits their needs.
Consumers equipped with smartphones expect fast, convenient and uniquely relevant shopping experiences in store and online. As a result, one-third of shoppers are not satisfied with the in-store experience, turned off by everything from chronic out-of-stocks to cookie-cutter products and marketing messages that speak to the masses, as opposed to them as individuals.

These are just a few of the insights found in Zebra’s 10th annual shopper study, which surveyed nearly 7,500 consumers from North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East to gain a deeper understanding of shopper satisfaction and retail technology trends that are reshaping brick-and-mortar and online stores.
Consumers are better than ever at differentiating between low-quality and premium content. For marketers, this means the placement of their ads is critically important. Brands can’t afford to risk appearing alongside questionable content, not with 75% of consumers holding brands accountable for their ad environments. When brands are shown adjacent to Oath’s trustworthy, premium content, they experience 5x greater favorability - a striking example of the power of positive associations and the importance of knowing your digital neighbors.
It takes more than a single interaction to net a customer. By now, marketers understand the importance of multichannel engagement, but most still struggle to seamlessly connect the customer experience across channels.
Simply put, it’s easy to batch and blast a broadcast message to email, social, and mobile audiences, but consumers today want more. They want to see themselves in the brand, not just see the brand talk about themselves.
Additionally, personalizing messaging in one channel can be tricky enough, but connecting messaging, for an audience who is sprinting from one channel to the next, is a whole other hurdle.
Consider a typical visit to a brick-and-mortar retail store. As you search through the racks, deciding what to buy, what type of salesperson do you hope for? Someone aggressive, continuously asking if you’re ready to make a purchase? Or someone who’s never there when you have a question, no matter how hard you look? Ideally, most customers would say, the perfect salesperson falls somewhere in between. Someone who’s ready to jump in with assistance, but happily follows your cue.
