Application performance management (APM) focuses on monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing the performance and health of business applications across development, test, datacenter, and network environments. As mission-critical enterprise application environments become more complex because of the increased use of cloud, big data, and mobility, APM is becoming a top priority for IT teams that need to quickly and cost effectively track end-to-end application performance, identify and remediate the root cause of performance problems, and maintain service levels required by end users and business stakeholders. SaaS-delivered APM solutions offer rapid time to value for IT organizations that need to implement APM quickly with minimal disruption to the business.

Service providers around the world share concerns about running out of bandwidth. Business challenges surrounding continued bandwidth growth, linked to video, mobility, and cloud applications, are significant. Service providers also report declining revenue from a cost-per-bit perspective, so not only does the network need to grow, it also needs to grow more cost effectively. The Cisco Virtual Networking Index™ (Cisco VNI™) predicts that over 50 billion devices will be connected over these networks by 2020. The network effects of the Internet of Things, LTE mobility, and mobile video are just beginning to be understood. In a world where mobile device network additions are growing four times faster than the population, and machine-to-machine (M2M) device network additions are growing five times faster than mobile device additions, this problem is clearly becoming highly important and requires a good solution.

As organizations aim to increase business agility and streamline costs, demand for public cloud services continues to grow exponentially, with Gartner predicting it will become the majority of new IT spending by 2016. This evolving application ecosystem with its intensive performance demands is placing new pressures on traditional public cloud services. Amid this shift, Internap surveyed nearly 250 Internet infrastructure decision makers to gain insight into cloud adoption, requirements and challenges – including the differences in feedback between the cloud-wise, those using cloud services, and the cloud-wary, those with no near-term plans to use cloud services. The details of these findings are reflected in this Cloud Landscape Report.

The focus of SDN is on transforming the network to support applications and meet the expectations of users and businesses that rely on them. Scaling modern networks is challenging due to the explosive growth of compute, network, and application resources-combined with increased mobility of apps migrating to the cloud and users across multiple devices. As an approach to operationalizing the network, SDN enables organizations to achieve greater economies of operational scale through the use of APIs to automate and orchestrate the network, as well as the application services that support applications. Read this whitepaper to learn how applications are driving new requirements for both businesses and networks that require disruptive, radical change.

Enterprises grapple with a host of challenges that are spurring the creation of hybrid clouds: collections of computing infrastructure spread across multiple data centers and multiple cloud providers. This new concept often provokes uncertainty, which must be addressed head on. As more applications and computing resources move to the cloud, enterprises will become more dependent on cloud vendors, whether the issue is access, hosting, management, or any number of other services. Cloud consumers want to avoid vendor lock-in—having only one cloud provider. They want to know that they will have visibility into data and systems across multiple platforms and providers. They want to be able to move servers and storage around without a negative impact on application availability.

Enterprises look to private clouds for more than just virtual infrastructure provisioning. Private cloud vendors have started to bundle additional capabilities into their solutions, including pervasive VM management capabilities, design tools for complex application templates, and service catalogs. Over the next 12 months, more than half of enterprises will prioritize building internal private clouds. Today, the most common approach is through the purchase of commercial software to layer atop existing infrastructure resources. Regardless of the approach you choose, there’s no shortage of tools to support your efforts.

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. At the time this definition was published, “cloud” was already part of industry parlance, and was beginning to take root in the general lexicon. Additionally, global business spending for infrastructure and services related to the cloud had topped $78 billion. This year, enterprise spending on the cloud will reach an estimated $174 billion, and is expected to climb to $235 billion by 2017.2 Inevitably, as both business IT and consumer mindsets evolve toward the cloud in coming years, we will continue to witness dramatic growth in IT products in some areas, and significant reductions in other areas—resulting in a reshaping of the industry as a whole.

Server virtualization is revolutionizing the datacenter by making applications mobile, increasing application uptime, and allowing IT admins to allocate computing resources more efficiently. The technology has been deployed widely enough that the role of the computer server has evolved from directly hosting operating systems and applications to hosting fully virtualized environments. Server that can support more virtualized machines (VMs - complete application stacks) allow their users to gain higher return on their IT investments. Private Cloud can extend the virtualization benefits in ways that broaden the benefits of virtualization to all parts of the organization. In this white paper, you will learn how Corporate IT uses these tools to meet the increasing demand for IT services.
