To accommodate increasingly dense technology environments, increasingly critical business applications, and increasingly stringent service level demands, data centers are typically engineered to deliver the highest-affordable availability levels facility-wide. Within this monolithic design approach, the same levels of mechanical, electrical, and IT infrastructure are installed to support systems and applications regardless of their criticality or business risk if unplanned downtime occurs. Typically, high redundancy designs are deployed in order to provide for all eventualities. The result, in many instances, is to unnecessarily drive up both upfront construction or retro-fitting costs and ongoing operating expenses.

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is upon us and manufacturers who want to stay competitive need to adapt or they will inevitably fall behind. However, that’s easier said than done. Updating proprietary legacy systems can be expensive, complicated, and lead to unwanted downtime that can slow production on the plant floor. How do companies accomplish such a critical change without draining budgets and upending workflow? Surprisingly, the answer doesn't always involve completely rebuilding systems from scratch. Instead, removing antiquated equipment and streamlining connectivity without creating new security risks could successfully start organizations on their path to reaping the benefits of Manufacturing 4.0

We live in the age of “multi”. Everything is becoming more complex, more “intelligent”, and more distributed. Hybrid cloud isn’t really the new frontier—some companies have been operating in a hybrid cloud environment for nearly a decade—the new frontier is learning HOW to take full advantage of hybrid cloud without creating data silos or busting the IT budget. Enterprises are, of course, always looking for ways to make their computer systems faster, more highly available, more fault tolerant, and simpler to scale. But in the age of “multi,” this is becoming harder and harder to do. Imagine running a social network with millions of U.S.-based users and millions of European users. You could host all your servers and data in the United States, but then all of your European users would have a slower experience using your application than their U.S.-based counterparts. You could host all your servers and data in Europe, but then the U.S.-based users would have a slower experience. An obvio

"Visibility into the live mix of network and application activity being hosted and delivered by the IT infrastructure has always is a 'must-have' for many aspects of IT planning and operations. This explosion in the amount of information is similar to the boom the marketing world saw in the early 2000’s with the introduction of customer data. Now that recruiters finally have access to the same types of information as marketers, it’s becoming more clear that recruiting is marketing. Whereas the marketing world immediately saw the value in this data and latched onto technologies that could leverage the information, the recruiting world is just catching up. The proliferation of CRMs has revolutionized marketing and business development. Creating and maintaining relationships has always been part of a sound business strategy, but that nebulous process has now been operationalized through software like Salesforce. There is a reason the CRM software market has boomed to over $20 billion...it works. Personalizing the process to maintain constant contact and build relationships has been shown to be extremely effective in converting leads to sales.

Your users, especially when working outside of the office, no longer need to always connect to the corporate network to get work done. They often connect directly to SaaS apps. And, let’s face it, employees also don’t turn on the VPN if they’re using their work laptop for personal use — which means they’re left with very little security protection. Plus, many organizations are now using direct internet connections at branch offices, which means employees and guest users don’t get the protection of your traditional security stack. Not only are more offices connecting directly to the internet — it’s estimated that 70% of branch offices already have some direct internet access — but attackers recognize these weak points in their targets and have started exploiting them more. To solve these new challenges, security controls must also shift to the cloud. This in-depth white paper describes how security must evolve to protect users anywhere they access the internet.

To support business continuity, many organizations eagerly avoid putting all their eggs in one basket. Understanding the critical role of last-mile connectivity and always-available Internet access, savvy firms utilize redundant wide area network (WAN) and Internet connections from multiple service providers to ensure network availability in addition to load balancing. Despite the good intentions, their Internet connectivity risks may still be in a single basket. That is because internet service providers (ISPs) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) may operate using leased network infrastructure from the same incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC).

Raising IT inlet temperatures is a common recommendation given to data center operators as a strategy to improve data center efficiency. While it is true that raising the temperature does result in more economizer hours, it does not always have a positive impact on the data center overall. In this paper, we provide a cost (capex & energy) analysis of a data center to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the data center holistically, inclusive of the IT equipment energy. The impact of raising temperatures on server failures is also discussed.

Speed is increasingly becoming the most important factor in project execution for a modern business. Of course, it has always been important to deliver projects as quickly as possible—that’s why schedules were developed and managed to. But historically those schedules were usually rather arbitrary. Today, things are very different. Customers expect more functionality more quickly than ever before, and they are unwilling to tolerate delays or missed commitments. Organizations have recognized the importance of minimizing time to delivery, seeking to leverage opportunities and solve challenges in as little time as possible, but in doing so they have frequently forgotten one critical aspect. They aren’t actively managing those time horizons—they are simply careening headlong toward the end goal. That can introduce significant problems, and that’s what we want to look at in this white paper.
