Education is supposed to be the great equalizer and the primary vehicle for upward mobility. But, the reality today is that all too often, where a child is born determines his educationalprospects. Nine-year-olds in low-income communities are already three grade levels behind their peers in high-income communities. Half of them won’t graduate from high school andthe fifty percent who do will read and do math, on average, at the level of eighth graders inhigh-income communities. The educational inequity that persists along socioeconomic andracial lines is our nation’s greatest injustice.
